This is episode 129.
00:00:26.076 --> 00:00:27.957
Been doing this for three years.
00:00:27.957 --> 00:00:35.212
We got a packed, sold-out crowd and everybody's clamoring to get these VIP tickets that we're going to give away tonight.
00:00:35.212 --> 00:00:36.804
So who's going to win?
00:00:36.804 --> 00:00:38.109
Who's going to win the tickets?
00:00:38.109 --> 00:00:41.966
Man, this is going to be great.
00:00:41.966 --> 00:00:43.063
We're going to be in the box.
00:00:43.063 --> 00:00:44.146
How was that box, diego?
00:00:44.146 --> 00:00:44.908
It was great.
00:00:45.149 --> 00:00:45.810
Great experience.
00:00:45.979 --> 00:00:47.043
Man, great experience.
00:00:47.043 --> 00:00:48.960
All you can eat, man.
00:00:48.960 --> 00:00:53.906
We had like four meals yesterday watching March Madness, so they had to roll us out of there.
00:00:53.906 --> 00:00:58.506
Diet went all the way out the window and, yeah, we had a great time.
00:00:58.506 --> 00:01:05.560
So we cannot wait to spend tomorrow afternoon with somebody here in in the audience and it's gonna be a great, great time.
00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:06.302
We've got duke.
00:01:06.341 --> 00:01:11.313
Who's duke playing diego taylor oh, you're gonna beat him, but it'll be fun to see.
00:01:11.313 --> 00:01:12.646
Really, are you sure about that?
00:01:12.646 --> 00:01:14.734
You're gonna beat him by at least 20, maybe even 30.
00:01:14.734 --> 00:01:16.682
Okay, all right for your sake?
00:01:16.742 --> 00:01:17.222
I hope so.
00:01:17.222 --> 00:01:20.149
And then we've got florida.
00:01:20.149 --> 00:01:20.930
Who's florida playing?
00:01:20.930 --> 00:01:22.033
They play uconn.
00:01:22.033 --> 00:01:24.504
That's gonna be good.
00:01:24.504 --> 00:01:32.007
We've got the current back-to-back champion facing the last team that went back-to-back, so that's going to be phenomenal.
00:01:32.007 --> 00:01:33.444
So we cannot wait to see that.
00:01:33.444 --> 00:01:34.908
But how you doing, man?
00:01:35.329 --> 00:01:35.790
Doing good.
00:01:35.790 --> 00:01:37.605
Duke won by 45, I think.
00:01:37.605 --> 00:01:38.771
So doing good.
00:01:38.771 --> 00:01:42.561
All right On the road to the natty All right, did a little something.
00:01:42.602 --> 00:01:44.284
That that was, uh, that was impressive.
00:01:44.284 --> 00:01:45.727
It was great to see cooper flag.
00:01:45.727 --> 00:01:48.813
We got to see him in person, so that was fantastic.
00:01:48.813 --> 00:01:52.742
But uh, oh man, florida, florida looks different.
00:01:52.742 --> 00:01:54.165
Hey, that that's something different.
00:01:54.165 --> 00:02:03.864
Right there, man you're not worried about florida hey look man, there's some grown men out there playing man we have more talent okay, you have more talent, we're gonna.
00:02:03.884 --> 00:02:04.486
We're gonna see.
00:02:04.486 --> 00:02:22.067
I would love to see that matchup, but they've got to get past houston though, because you know, houston is my squad they gotta get the border, gotta get past yukon okay, deuce, gotta get past baylor, that's not that's not the same thing, all right, okay, well, man, any.
00:02:22.067 --> 00:02:24.762
Uh, what was your analysis on the tournament so far, man?
00:02:24.762 --> 00:02:25.746
What's going on with the tournament?
00:02:25.840 --> 00:02:32.805
I think it's been a good tournament, been a few upsets, had Magnesi, drake, arkansas Arkansas is playing really well.
00:02:32.805 --> 00:02:35.045
Yeah, I think it's been a good tournament Okay.
00:02:35.205 --> 00:02:41.526
Yeah, yeah, man, I had St John's and, yeah, I took a dive with that one, dive with that one.
00:02:41.526 --> 00:02:42.146
So I had our.
00:02:42.146 --> 00:02:45.051
Yeah, yeah, you got, you got lucky on that one.
00:02:45.051 --> 00:02:50.884
But that's okay, all I need is Houston to come back at the end.
00:02:50.884 --> 00:02:51.387
That's all that matters.
00:02:51.387 --> 00:02:54.820
As long as you pick the national champion, which we all know I'm gonna do, then I'm good, I'm gonna win the, I'm gonna win the raffle.
00:02:54.961 --> 00:02:56.861
Got to get past Duke in the final four first.
00:02:57.103 --> 00:03:01.366

00:05:00.766 --> 00:05:05.870

First female athletic director at North Carolina A&T.
00:06:14.824 --> 00:06:18.915
Yes, yes, yes, yes.
00:06:18.915 --> 00:06:19.415
So many.
00:06:19.415 --> 00:06:22.605
A mentor, advocate and champion for equality.
00:06:22.605 --> 00:06:25.598
Her influence in the world of sports is unmatched.
00:06:25.598 --> 00:06:28.966
Legacy continues to inspire many future generations.
00:06:29.045 --> 00:06:34.624
We have never had a standing ovation for someone to be introduced, but I think this is time.
00:06:34.624 --> 00:06:42.843
If you are able, please stand on your feet and welcome Mr Loris D Todd.
00:06:42.843 --> 00:07:09.644
Wow, wow, wow, wow, welcome.
00:07:09.644 --> 00:07:12.050
Yes, yes, it is great to have you here.
00:07:12.050 --> 00:07:24.334
We've had the pleasure of dining and breaking bread with you a few times, so not only are you an amazing cook, mentor, but you also recommend amazing food establishments.
00:07:24.334 --> 00:07:25.646
So we appreciate that.
00:07:25.880 --> 00:07:26.946
I get that from my son.
00:07:29.660 --> 00:07:30.461
Yes, yes.
00:07:30.461 --> 00:07:33.367
So I'm going to go ahead and start off here.
00:07:33.367 --> 00:07:40.571
Again, we have to acknowledge you being on the cover of Corn Flakes in 1980.
00:07:40.571 --> 00:07:46.850
I know that was tremendous, but just tell us how that moment shaped your visibility and influence.
00:07:46.850 --> 00:07:48.567
Just tell us a little more about how that happened.
00:07:49.019 --> 00:07:52.129
Okay, well, I have been fortunate enough to be lucky.
00:07:52.129 --> 00:08:10.807
I had been a high school track and field coach on the south side of Chicago and I had also done some modeling sort of on the side, and I was one of the five women that introduced fashion fair cosmetics and that was my big promo.
00:08:10.807 --> 00:08:17.949
So it was the year of the Olympics 1980, and which US ended up boycotting.
00:08:17.949 --> 00:08:22.110
But the Kellogg's people called and asked my agent.
00:08:22.110 --> 00:08:23.307
They said isn't that lady a coach?
00:08:23.307 --> 00:08:23.831
And they said yeah.
00:08:23.831 --> 00:08:24.535
And they said well, we want to put.
00:08:24.535 --> 00:08:27.004
And they said yeah, and they said well, we want to put her on the Kellogg's box.
00:08:27.004 --> 00:08:28.711
And that's how it happened.
00:08:29.420 --> 00:08:30.382
That's how it happened.
00:08:30.382 --> 00:08:31.786
Wow, good story.
00:08:31.786 --> 00:08:33.389
Yes, yes, yes.
00:08:33.389 --> 00:08:44.910
When I when I met your son, when he showed me that I was, I was just blown away and yeah, so so fortunate to to now now be in your presence and be able to share your story with many others.
00:08:44.910 --> 00:08:48.488
So it's something that everybody needs to know all that you have achieved.
00:08:48.528 --> 00:08:54.951
So, diego, I'm gonna kick it to you, man yeah well, can you tell us about how you brought women's college sports live TV?
00:08:56.421 --> 00:08:58.503
absolutely um, one of the things.
00:08:58.503 --> 00:09:00.244
When I was hired at the ACC.
00:09:00.244 --> 00:09:13.113
I was hired to actually build the brand for women's basketball, but along with that I had 23 other sports that I was responsible for, but basketball was my main one.
00:09:13.113 --> 00:09:17.176
So we were in Fayetteville, north Carolina, at the time.
00:09:17.176 --> 00:09:30.234
That was our first tournament that I did, and then we moved from there to Rock Hill and from Rock Hill we moved to Independence Arena in Charlotte.
00:09:30.821 --> 00:09:38.767
But going back to the Fayetteville one, it was just not a good situation and I kind of inherited it.
00:09:38.767 --> 00:09:56.309
But I had gone to a couple of the men's tournaments and saw all the things that they had that the women didn't have, and so I started calling friends of mine that were doctors, dentists, just to come and volunteer and just give us that presence at the tournament.
00:09:56.309 --> 00:10:00.360
So we ended up moving to Indian Independence.
00:10:00.360 --> 00:10:07.645
No, we moved to Rock Hill and we were not getting live TV, we were getting tape for the delay.
00:10:07.645 --> 00:10:13.950
So when you do take, delay is shown like two or three o'clock in the morning or whenever it was convenient women's basketball.
00:10:13.950 --> 00:10:32.686
And they listened to me and basically told me the producer said well, we don't want to spend all that money to see a bunch of women running up and down the floor looking like men.
00:10:32.686 --> 00:10:36.352
So I kept my eyes down because I knew if I looked up I'd probably cut them.
00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:40.083
And so I went on and I listened.
00:10:40.083 --> 00:10:42.206
So finally they said okay, I'll tell you what.
00:10:42.206 --> 00:10:43.990
We're going to give you one live game.
00:10:43.990 --> 00:10:50.668
It's going to be on a Monday night at six o'clock and that was going to be our game.
00:10:50.668 --> 00:11:13.538
Now Monday, coming out of Charlotte, going home Monday night six o'clock not real prime time, but, as fate would have it, the infamous Don Staley was playing for the University of Virginia and Virginia had been one and two in the nation that whole time.
00:11:13.538 --> 00:11:23.273
Long story short, we went into three overtimes and they couldn't start the Colonial Men's Basketball Championship.
00:11:23.273 --> 00:11:25.600
It was due to start at eight, but they couldn't break away from us.
00:11:25.600 --> 00:11:31.051
Start at eight, but they couldn't break away from us.
00:11:31.051 --> 00:11:33.798
So we ended up getting six live games because they realized just how big women's basketball was.
00:11:33.817 --> 00:11:34.278
So that was my take.
00:11:34.278 --> 00:11:37.225
Wow, that's fantastic, that's fantastic.
00:11:38.087 --> 00:11:41.501
How did you bring three officials to the women's college basketball game?
00:11:42.605 --> 00:11:46.253
I was at a game at University of North Carolina.
00:11:46.253 --> 00:11:57.129
I was sitting in the end zone and Marion Jones who I already knew who she was because I'm a track person she inbounded the ball and beat the ball to the receiver.
00:11:57.129 --> 00:12:00.140
I was like two people can't do this.
00:12:00.140 --> 00:12:04.808
The men already had three and they had a 35 second clock.
00:12:04.808 --> 00:12:08.115
We had two with a 30 second clock.
00:12:08.115 --> 00:12:17.855
So myself and my counterpart at the Southeastern Conference decided we would push the nation to move the three person officiating for women's basketball.
00:12:17.855 --> 00:12:28.129
We bought the proposal to all of the women commissioners and one of them said well, we're going to three person over my dead body, we don't want to spend that extra money.
00:12:28.129 --> 00:12:51.690
So Pat and I went back and the ACC and the SEC went with it and by the end of the first month the whole nation went to three person officiating crew for women's basketball and the lady who said that they would go over her dead body got up the next year and said you're now looking at a dead person.
00:12:56.722 --> 00:12:57.024
Wow.
00:12:57.024 --> 00:13:14.764
So while you again have done so much and have moved mountains and your leadership, you know you're clearly an amazing leader, but how has that evolved over just over your career, or are there any nuggets that you can share with our audience?
00:13:14.764 --> 00:13:20.162
As far as leadership, we have a lot of aspiring leaders here in the audience today.
00:13:21.003 --> 00:13:30.392
Well, I think to be a good leader you have to be a student of the sport, you have to be willing to help other people.
00:13:30.392 --> 00:13:50.171
I've always said that it's easier to reach out and reach back and bring somebody along with you, and to lead you have to be someone that someone would like to follow and you share and mentor them and give them you know all the things that they need and hopefully they will accept those.
00:13:51.301 --> 00:13:52.784
Okay, oh, wow, wow.
00:13:52.784 --> 00:13:53.967
Well, I tell you what.
00:13:53.967 --> 00:13:55.672
We have a question from the audience.
00:13:55.672 --> 00:13:59.102
We're going to go ahead and take their question, so thank you.
00:14:12.335 --> 00:14:29.945
Hello, I am Maria and I own a women's flag football league here in Raleigh, North Carolina Baller's Choice Sports, and I want to know what advice you would give to other women becoming leaders in sports as far as the challenges in the male-dominated industry.
00:14:31.047 --> 00:14:32.249
Thank you for that question.
00:14:32.249 --> 00:14:37.566
Actually, I am really a fan of flag football and I love to see women.
00:14:37.566 --> 00:14:49.145
Just if you have a sport that's emerging, like flag football, they need people like you who are willing to bring that along, and you just have to get out there and do the right thing.
00:14:49.145 --> 00:14:53.984
And sometimes it's not popular, but you have to do the right thing.
00:14:53.984 --> 00:14:56.451
So being a leader is not something I think you learn.
00:14:56.451 --> 00:14:58.842
You either have it or you don't.
00:14:58.903 --> 00:15:02.869
Yeah, All right, okay, and we have another question.
00:15:03.789 --> 00:15:10.539
Yes, Hi there.
00:15:11.120 --> 00:15:11.201
Hi.
00:15:11.321 --> 00:15:19.654
So coming from a university setting, I know that oftentimes we have athletic directors that are in place, but they also teach.
00:15:19.860 --> 00:15:21.061
So did you teach a course?
00:15:21.061 --> 00:15:49.605
No, actually, in Division I, for the most part particularly when you're in the major conferences like the ACC, sec, big Ten, so forth coaches do not have to teach and athletic directors maybe, at some of the lower level and that's not any offense, but some of the maybe the lower level Division I may have to teach, but right now most people don't have to teach.
00:15:49.605 --> 00:15:51.791
Thank you.
00:15:52.493 --> 00:15:53.856
Thank you All right.
00:15:53.856 --> 00:15:57.947
Okay, we'll take more from the audience a little later, but, diego, we'll kick it back to you.
00:15:58.970 --> 00:16:04.570
With over 50 years in athletics, which achievement or moment are you proud of most?
00:16:05.672 --> 00:16:06.033
Oh boy.
00:16:08.120 --> 00:16:08.621
That's tough?
00:16:09.003 --> 00:16:10.525
Wow, that's a loaded question.
00:16:10.525 --> 00:16:11.307
I don't know.
00:16:11.307 --> 00:16:24.732
I was the first African-American female to be the president of the then National Association of Collegiate Athletic Administrators.
00:16:24.732 --> 00:16:28.639
It was for women and this was back in 1996.
00:16:28.639 --> 00:16:33.211
And at the time I was the only female of color in that organization.
00:16:33.211 --> 00:16:51.014
My goal was to bring more African-American women or minority women into the organization there are now over 500, the organization there are now over 500, including the athletic director at Duke.
00:16:51.014 --> 00:16:59.743
She is now the new president of NACWR.
00:16:59.783 --> 00:17:07.013
It's now called Women Leaders in Sports, so it encompasses not only college but all levels and I have my shirt, yes, and so I think that's one of my big accomplishments.
00:17:09.698 --> 00:17:10.178
All right.
00:17:10.178 --> 00:17:19.286
So by being March Madness right now, everyone is heavily involved with or excited about college and, of course, with the ACC.
00:17:19.286 --> 00:17:21.614
Unfortunately, we only have Duke left.
00:17:21.614 --> 00:17:24.188
Although we like Duke, we only have Duke left in the ACC.
00:17:24.188 --> 00:17:44.151
But could you tell us about I've heard you talk about Jimmy V in the past and just how him and maybe some others have helped you break barriers and just how it takes more than just one, how you need other people to help you move mountains.
00:17:44.151 --> 00:17:51.473
Can you maybe perhaps share that story and just talk a little bit about those that have helped you achieve greatness?
00:17:52.119 --> 00:17:52.961
Well, absolutely.
00:17:52.961 --> 00:18:00.055
When I was introduced as the assistant commissioner for the Atlantic Coast Conference, it was here in Raleigh at NC State.
00:18:00.055 --> 00:18:06.089
The room was full of athletic directors and faculty reps.
00:18:06.089 --> 00:18:08.074
They were all white men.
00:18:08.074 --> 00:18:18.732
When they introduced me, the commissioner introduced me who happened to be the father of the current athletic director at NC State, boo Corrigan.
00:18:19.173 --> 00:18:32.934
His father, eugene Corrigan, was actually the one that hired me and when I came to the ACC he sat me down and he said Dee, before you, the ACC stood for all Caucasian conference.
00:18:32.934 --> 00:18:35.560
He said we just changed that, didn't we?
00:18:35.560 --> 00:18:49.292
And I said yes, and so, as I was introduced, I got a standing ovation, some of them reluctantly, but they stood anyway and gave me a standing ovation, some of them reluctantly, but they stood anyway and gave me a standing ovation and welcomed me to the conference.
00:18:49.292 --> 00:19:06.275
Well, jimmy V came up to me and he says listen, it's very important to us that you're successful, because your success is our success and if there's anything that any of us could do, please reach out and contact us, because we want you to be successful.
00:19:06.275 --> 00:19:15.325
So that was my first meeting of Jimmy V and he was a wonderful person, just a great guy, and that meant so much to me.
00:19:15.545 --> 00:19:18.892
Yes, yeah, yeah, I love hearing, hearing that.
00:19:18.892 --> 00:19:21.343
Thank you, thank you for sharing that, for sharing that.
00:19:21.343 --> 00:19:25.369
So I have one one last question for you.
00:19:25.369 --> 00:19:35.592
And so we've seen a lot of growth in women's sports and with WNBA and NCAA, and a lot of that is because of you.
00:19:35.592 --> 00:19:45.189
Could you tell us what excites you the most about what has happened in women's sports and is there anything that still needs to improve or what would you?
00:19:45.189 --> 00:19:48.683
And is there anything that still needs to improve or what would you like to call out that still needs to improve?
00:19:49.446 --> 00:19:56.330
Wow, it just makes me smile when I see so many women involved in sports at the higher level.
00:19:56.330 --> 00:20:00.929
One of the people that I'm really proud of is Dawn Staley.
00:20:01.670 --> 00:20:02.131
Oh yes.
00:20:02.231 --> 00:20:03.074
Dawn Staley.
00:20:03.074 --> 00:20:10.461
Dawn Staley was, oh yes, dawn Staley.
00:20:10.461 --> 00:20:12.506
Dawn Staley was like my favorite and when she was playing for Virginia.
00:20:12.506 --> 00:20:16.334
But I knew that she was going to be a good coach because we were at the final four.
00:20:16.334 --> 00:20:18.683
Virginia was in the final game.
00:20:18.683 --> 00:20:20.788
Her coach called timeout.
00:20:20.788 --> 00:20:24.383
She tells them what to do on the way back on the floor.
00:20:24.383 --> 00:20:26.761
Dawn is saying and you do, you go, here you go.
